Understanding Vinyasa: Finding Flow Between Grace and Strength
Understanding Vinyasa: Finding Flow Between Grace and Strength
While Yoga Tribe Brooklyn is deeply rooted in the Classic 26+2 tradition, our Vinyasa Flow classes offer a complementary experience that focuses on the fluid connection between breath and movement. If the 26+2 series is the "foundation," Vinyasa is the "dance."
What is Vinyasa?
Vinyasa is a style of yoga where we transition from one pose directly into the next, following the rhythm of the inhalation and exhalation. Unlike the 26+2 series, which is a set sequence, our Vinyasa classes are creatively sequenced by our instructors. This means every class is a unique journey, challenging your body and mind in new ways.
The Dance of Breath and Movement
In a Vinyasa class, the breath is the conductor. The goal is to move as if you are underwater—with grace, control, and intentionality. This "flow" state helps to quiet the "monkey mind" (the constant internal chatter). When you are focused on matching your movement to your breath, there is no room for worrying about your to-do list.
Building Functional Strength
While Hatha yoga (like our 26+2) focuses on holding poses for alignment and stamina, Vinyasa builds functional strength through transitions. Pushing up from a low plank (Chaturanga) into an Upward Facing Dog builds incredible upper body and core strength. The continuous movement also keeps the heart rate elevated, providing a great aerobic benefit.
Why Variety Matters
We believe that a well-rounded "Tribe" member benefits from both stillness and flow. The 26+2 series provides the discipline and heat to heal the body, while Vinyasa provides the creativity and mobility to keep the practice playful and diverse. Integrating both into your weekly routine is the best way to ensure total body wellness.
